COLLECTION DESCRIPTION:
The collection holds books or prints with signatures, dedications, notes and other handwritten annotations by the authors. Their importance and value are defined by their handwriting, which like correspondence bear witness of the character of a person, literary and other contacts of creators, reveals the genesis of individual literary and scientific works, it is a relevant biographical material. Thus, such publications are unique because of their special cultural and historical significance.
Copies with handwritten dedications of authors, their notes or other records have been collected since the foundation of the library in 1774. After the Second World War, they were kept in the Collection of Rare Prints (R), while annotated publications have been kept as a special collection since 2011 with the signature R av, and the name of the author’s record (e.g. R av Trstenjak A. or R av Karlin A.).
The selection of autographs in the digital collection covers the historical, literary and cultural aspects of records or their authors. It presents the oldest collection records of this kind, such as Dalmatin's dedication, autographs testifying to the cultural life of important Slovenes, like a personal copy of Prešeren's Poems from the legacy of Tom Zupan, a literary historian and collector of Prešeren's literary legacy. Annotations don’t only evidence of their contacts, they can also express the author's beliefs, views or literary poetics, like Anton Vodnik's note on the occasion of the Carinthian plebiscite, and a commentary on the poetry and language of Jože Udovič.
Annotated publication pages are seen by clicking on the document's serial number. Where there are several notes in a publication, only individual pages have been selected. If known, the circumstances of the creation of the record are also specified, as well as a brief bibliographical record of the publication. Complete records of annotated publications are kept by the Manuscript Collection in the Rare Publications Catalogue, and in the catalogue of Publications with Autographs. The collection is being expanded.
