Melita Vovk (1928-2020) is one of the most renowned Slovenian illustrators, painters and scenographers. Her drawings and illustrations can be seen in more than eighty books. In 2010, she received the Hinko Smrekar Lifetime Achievement Award.
She was a regular guest at literary meetings, especially at the International PEN Congress in Bled, where she portrayed the participants and documented the events. On these occasions, more than three hundred original and outstanding drawings of Slovenian, the world-famous writers and other cultural creators were created; her daughter Ejti Štih donated the drawings to the National and University Library.
The portraits drawn with pencil or felt-tip pen, ballpoint pen, felt-tip pen, wax pens and other drawing tools, are an extraordinary document of the time and the uniqueness of the moment, which the artist captured each time anew. According to Boris A. Novak, these portraits invite us to recall the many (un)familiar faces and events at which they were created. At the same time, through admiration of the art of portrait-making, they call again and again for creativity which fills the blank pages of notebooks and sketchbooks.

"But the human face is a more complex problem than it first appears. To me, beautiful and ugly are as relative as genius and crazy, or normal and abnormal. Where is the limit of the one and where begins the other.... and, the ugliest face may be beautiful as a reflection of a noble spirit, and the most beautiful face may be ugly as an empty, indifferent mask of a beautiful doll." (from Melita Vovk's diary)
