SIMON GREGORČIČ – 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH Gregorčič‛s poems have often been recited on stage from the end of the 19th century until today. They have been a hopeful consolation to the fellow countryman living all around the world and encouragement for those who fought and suffered in the First and Second World Wars. Composers have set to music a number of his poems because of their melody and lyrical quality, and on journeys, many of them have become virtually folk-songs. Poet‛s legacy testifies to his poetic creativity and personal habitation in place and time. At the same time, it reveals and presents the culture and history of the Slovenians from the second half of the 19th century onwards. Gregorčič has left a large and comprehensive personal archive of manuscripts, letters and correspondence, and even though many of his photographs have been preserved, many artistic representations have been produced after his death. Numerous articles published during poet‛s lifetime or after his death have been dedicated to his life and work.
A selection of the original archive material collection and first editions will be presented at the exhibition. It will be supplemented by photograph reproductions on posters. The exhibition is intended for the general public as well as for the secondary school students.

TO BE A POET IS TO SEE – Ibsen in our time The centenary of Henrik Ibsen‛s death During Ibsen Year 2006, a wide range of events will take place all over the world and National and University Library will join this project marking the 100th anniversary of the death of the great Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen, who is recognized as one of the founders of the modern European drama. The exhibition will be a prominent event also on the European scale, as only in Slovenia the unique and complete collection of Ibsen‛s first editions will be open to the public. Ms Anne Brit Reigstad has kindly lent 25 original book editions from her own private collection. The second part of the exhibition will present the Slovenian translations of Ibsen‛s works, Slovenian writers‛ and critics‛ responses to his creativity, and the stage productions of Ibsen’s plays on the Slovenian territory.
With his remarkable literary work, Henrik Ibsen had a strong impact on the Slovenian literature: he certainly inspired Ivan Cankar‛s most known dramas, as well as other Slovenian authors (Kristan, Gangl, Kraigher…) during the period of bourgeois drama at the turn of the 20th century. His extraordinary influence and popularity is also evidenced in a great number of productions staged in the Slovenian theatres, from the first one in 1892 onwards. The exhibition has been produced in co-operation with the Norwegian Embassy, which has sponsored the complete anniversary programme. On the exhibition opening day, also a symposium will take place in Ljubljana and it will feature Norwegian and Slovenian experts covering the topics related to Ibsen‛s life and work.
More information about the famous playwright and his work, and the events accompanying the anniversary of his death can be found at the web site www.ibsen.net . Author of the exhibition: Marijan Rupert, MA (NUK) |

ANTON AŠKERC – EXHIBITION TO CELEBRATE THE 150th ANNIVERSARY OF BIRTH Although Aškerc‛s literary opus seem to have lost by now an important part of the popularity and value once associated with it by his contemporaries, the poet can still be rightfully considered one of the most interesting personalities in the Slovene literary and cultural history from the end of the 19th century. His most peculiar and contrasting life story encompasses shifts from priesthood to the study of Koran and oriental spiritualities, finally becoming a freethinking liberal. By the intervention of the Ljubljana mayor Dr Ivan Hribar he was appointed city archivist, thus putting in order the precious city archive and library. He was enthusiastic about travel and as a dedicated Slavophile he was travelling mainly to Slavic countries. He was also very fond of ancient cultures, thus discovering antique civilisations (Greece, Italy) and the Near East countries (Turkey, Egypt).
In spite of his »non-modernity« a place of honour has been nevertheless reserved for Aškerc in the Slovene literary history. In poetry he first essayed in lyrics to then turn completely to epic poetry, therefore he can be legitimately called the most distinctive Slovene epic poet. The most successful Aškerc‛s ballads, such as Mejnik, Brodnik and Mutec Osojski have become part of the popular literary canon. His editorial contribution is significant, since he was editor of the Ljubljanski zvon (literary periodical) and important book editions of Prešeren and Kette, together with an anthology of Russian poetry. LONGING AND LOVE FOR THE HOME COUNTRY Many emigrants left the country in May 1945 firmly believing that they were leaving just for a shorter period – until the situation in the home country settled down. This ‛temporariness‛ however developed into exile for ever for an overwhelming majority of them. In foreign lands they managed to remake their lives and young people were seeking best education and higher university degrees just to pride themselves and prove their worth to both themselves and the world. A great many among them reached the highest academic levels, thus becoming universally renowned scientists. University professors Dr Rado L. Lenček and Dr Jože Velikonja belong to that group: they completed their studies in the US and later also taught there. Nevertheless they continued to develop and maintain family, friendly and professional contacts with the home country.
Dr Rado L. Lenček (1921-2005) – philologist, Slavic scholar, cultural historian and ethnologist, was a Professor at Columbia University, New York. He is author of a number of books and scientific articles. His research activities also led to creation of an outstandingly rich private library, comprising over 4000 books – mainly in the field of comparative Slavic linguistics. Dr Jože Velikonja (1923) – a geographer, Professor at Washington University, Seattle (US). His lifework concentrated on research of European immigration in the USA, especially Italians, Poles and Slovenes. He is author of a number of scientific monographs and articles on the aforementioned topic. The immigration years were also marked by a year-long friendship between the two researchers which culminated in several joint projects. The most important ones can be seen in the foundation of the Society for Slovene Studies and publication of the biography and bibliography »Who‛s who of Slovene Descent in the USA« (1992, 1995).
Both scientists have decided to donate their research material, manuscripts, correspondence and other important items (including Dr Lenček‛s library) to the National and University Library. The two bequests will be made available to those wishing to build upon their research. The exhibition will be showing only a part of this rich addition to library holdings and it goes without saying that without this written heritage our culture and science would surely be poorer.
