THE OPENING OF A NEW LIBRARY COMPUTER MANAGEMENT CENTRE
Yesterday, Minister of Culture Majda Širca Ravnikar opened the new Library Computer Management Centre at Leskoškova 12, where NUK has temporary off-site office and storage facilities.
The new communication node is quite an acquisition for the national library. The volume and significance of the digital library archive is rapidly growing, and, thus, also the risk of its destruction. The new Computer Management Centre facilities ensure protection against electromagnetic disturbance, e-emissions, and strokes of lightning. It provides active fire protection, anti-burglary and technical protection, appropriate climate and autonomy of operation in case of electricity power failure. Thus, a suitably equipped centre for safe and long-term preservation of digital material has been acquired. The new informatics centre is an important condition for the successful development of the Digital Library of Slovenia - the most important project of the Slovenian national library today and in future years.
On this occasion, we also showed the Minister around the physical material storage facilities.

May ’68 in Paris and the Student Movement in Ljubljana, 1968–1972
Posters, Film, and Photographs
, 29 January – 22 March 2009

The protests and strikes by students and workers in Paris and other French cities in May and June of 1968, which challenged the traditional values of society and destabilized the regime of Charles de Gaulle, left an indelible mark on the history of the second half of the twentieth century.

The exhibition presents around eighty posters, loaned by the Centre de la Gravure et de l’Image imprimée in La Louvière, Belgium. They were created for the events in Paris, and their image has become synonymous with the urban struggle. The student movement in Ljubljana, from 1968 to 1972, is documented by a film by Majda Širca, as well as the student newspapers Tribuna and SP (standing for slovensko podzemlje – “the Slovene underground”), leaflets and announcements, and photographs by Tone Stojko, Edi Šelhaus, and Žare Veselič, from the Museum and Galleries of the City of Ljubljana and Slovenia’s National Museum of Contemporary History.

Co-organizers: Centre de la Gravure et de l‛Image imprimée, The National and University Library

The most comprehensive corpus of digitized material – more than 45.000 issues of
Laibacher Zeitung with supplements.

This was the most read and influential newspaper with a long tradition of publishing (1778-1918), which was of great significance for the Slovenian territory before the appearance of the first newspapers in the Slovenian language. Its numerous supplements brought to the Slovenian readers‛ attention the ideas of Enlightenment, resolved topical issues and encouraged the creativity of the Slovenian authors.

Codex Suprasliensis listed in UNESCO‛s Memory of the World Register
During its last meeting, the UNESCO‛s Committee for the Memory of the World Programme included Codex Suprasliensis in the Memory of the World Register as the first document owned by a Slovenian institution. This has been the result of a joint nomination submitted by the three owners of the manuscript, i.e. the National Library in Warsaw, Poland (151 folios), the National Library of Russia in St. Petersburg (16 folios) and the National and University Library in Ljubljana, Slovenia (118 folios). The manuscript which originates from the first half of the 11th century in eastern Bulgaria is the largest among just a few surviving manuscripts in Old Church Slavonic and the main source for studying this language, writing and culture. It is also one of the earliest testimonials to the reception of Orthodox Christianity among the Slavs. The selection reflects the uniqueness of the manuscript, and at the same time increases awareness of the significance of preserving the collective memory and providing access to valuable documents.
