MANDALA

Mandala originals, painted with paintbrushes on glass in small dots technique will be exhibited. Each mandala has a personal message, every one of them is unique – it is the expression of an inner vision. Three books and paint books, an electronic paint book and greeting cards of mandalas have been published. They will be offered during the exhibition that will also give the visitors the opportunity to meditate upon the mandalas. Watching manadalas fills a person with joy, a feeling that life has regained its meaning and order. Round madala models will be available, so that visitors could paint them according to their inner inspiration. Everyone wishing to maintain or regain one’s psychical balance - children, youngsters and adults - will have the opportunity to paint them. Within a short period of time a positive inner change will be achieved.

BORIS PAHOR, THE BORDER AS A FATE

Works and documents of Slovenian writer and publicist Boris Pahor will mark Slovenian cultural holiday. Unfortunately, the fate of a Slovenian living abroad in critical times of antagonism of political systems had marked his life and literary work. Though he has been actively involved in writing after the Second World War, and is one of the most prominent publicists, he received the Prešeren Award for his lifework only in 1992. It could be asserted that only after the Slovenia’s independence he has fully penetrated into consciousness of a broader Slovenian public. During the last few years, his works are being republished in Slovenia and abroad. He has become famous also abroad, he has received many literary awards, and he was also nominated for the Nobel Prize. The exhibition will be a possibility to discover his writing career.

COMPOSER MARIJAN LIPOVŠEK -
ON THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BIRTH

The exhibition will focus on the musical sphere of his activity as composer, pianist, organiser, educator, translator … whose 100th anniversary of his birth is celebrated in the year 2010. The exhibition will try to answer the question: was Marjan Lipovšek a prophet of the Slovene culture? If yes – what is the value of his work today, how was it assessed in the past and what it might mean for the future? To present his life and wide-ranging work, material kept by the National and University Library and sound and video recordings of the national RTV Slovenia will be exhibited. The exhibition is a joint project of NUK and the Ljubljana Festival.

"TO THE INDIANS!"
ON THE 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF BIRTH OF
DR. BRANISLAVA SUŠNIK

In March 2010, the anthropologist Dr Branislava Sušnik (1920-1996) would be 90 years old. She dedicated her professional activities researching the Paraguayan Indians. She had studied history and prehistory at the universities of Ljubljana, Vienna and Rome. Due to political reasons, she left her homeland in 1945 and settled in Paraguay in 1951. She was director of the ethnographical museum in Asunción until her death. She left an enormous bibliography, mostly anthropological studies. Her slogan was: “Go to the place, to the Indians!”
The exhibition presents her life and work.

TREASURES OF THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY OF BUDAPEST
ON ITS 450 ANNIVERSARY

In the year 2009 the National and University Library (NUK) and the University Library of Budapest (Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem Egyetemi Könyvtár) signed a partnership contract. In this context two exhibitions will be organised: the one in Slovenia will present treasures of fonds of the University Library of Budapest, while the next year treasures of the National and University Library of Slovenia will be exhibited in Budapest.

The exhibition of written fonds of the University Library of Budapest includes some of the most valuable objects, also the medieval manuscript of their famous »corvin« collection of the Bibliotheca Corviniana, the library of the legendary King Matthias Corvinus (1443-1490), in Slovene folk tradition known as King Matjaž.

MOJMIR SEPE – ON THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BIRTH
 
On the occasion of his 80th anniversary, Mojmir Sepe, a classics of the Slovene popular music, donated to the NUK’s Music Collection manuscripts of his compositions he has created since the 50s of the previous century. His popular songs performed at various music festivals across the former Yugoslavia won more than twenty awards, “were familiar to every Slovene and Yugoslav ear”. But Mojzes is not only a composer of popular songs - he is a complex musician: he was a trumpeter of the Dance Band of the Ljubljana Radio and Television station, in 1956 he founded The Mojmir Sepe Band that recorded one of the first records of jazz music in Yugoslavia. He composed instrumental music for the so-called “rhythm-symphonic orchestra” (View from the Castle, Summer Nocturne, Marbles for Frane, Ljubljana Postcards,…) Many of his compositions have been remade and they all make an unbending repertoire of many Slovene orchestras.

STANKO VRAZ - ON THE 200th ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BIRTH

Stanko Vraz, a poet in critic was born 200 years ago. His name is strongly connected with patriotic activity and the Illyrian movement. The exhibition will present his oldest works and periodicals he was editor- in-ship of (Kolo and Danica), and material relating to the period when he was the secretary of the Matica ilirska. Visitors will find very interesting his manuscripts kept in NUK, his collection of national objects and translated works. The exhibition is prepared in co-operation with the National and University Library of Croatia that keeps a part of his works and material.

FLORES IN COLORES
RARE PRINTS OF FRANCISCAN MONASTERY
IN NOVO MESTO

In 2009, the Novo mesto Franciscan monastery celebrated the 540th anniversary of arrival of the first Franciscans to the Novo mesto diocese (in 1469), the next year (1470) the bishop of Ferentino handed them over the St. Lenart chapel. The exhibition of selected material of the monastery will mark the feast – more than a half of millennium of the monastery. Some 30 originals and reproductions on posters will be exhibited.

SCRIBES, PLACES, DAYS:
COLOPHONS IN MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPTS

At the beginning of September, Ljubljana will host the 17th international colloquium Comité International de Paléographie Latine; it wil be co-organised by Dr Nataša Golob, the National Gallery, the National and University Library and the Faculty of Arts of the Ljubljana University. This year colloquium will focus on signed manuscripts written by their authors. On that occasion the National and University Library and Dr Nataša Golob will organize two exhibitions (in the National Gallery or in the National and University Library). Visitors will see the most beautiful examples of records of the original codices held by NUK. Some 20 colophons of medieval manuscripts from the 14th and 15th century will be exhibited.

CARINTHIAN PLEBISCITE

In October 90 years ago, the Carinthian plebiscite defined the border between the newly established “the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes” and Austria. On both sides of the border, a strong propaganda machine accompanied the event. The exhibition presents documents kept by the National and University Library.

BIBLIOGRAPHY ON THE SLOVENIAN TERRITORY

The exhibition will present time dimension of bibliographies and bibliographic work on the Slovenian territory. The accompanying text will be an opportunity for researching groundwork of the national bibliography and special or expert bibliographies as well as the concept of national bibliography. The end of the research will be placing of bibliography into the spectrum of terms of Slovene national identity. The NUK archive will be reviewed, the survey of documents about division will be restored, and the review of personal file of librarians made for record of names of librarians who performed bibliographical work before the formal setting up of the NUK division will be presented. Bibliographical works from the 16th century until present will be exhibited. For the first time, preserved archive documents about the establishment and work of NUK bibliographic division will be on display.

VEDUTAS OF SLOVENIAN SITES

The 18th and 19th century’s vedutas and postcards (lithographs) of Slovene sites will be exhibited. After Valvasor and Vischer period, this is the golden age of veduta painting. In the beginning they were illustrations of travelling, geographical publications and ephemera. Vedutas were published in suits – series of selected veduta drawings under a common title. In the middle of the 19th century vedutas became self-sufficient drawings. The decisive event for Slovene veduta painting was the opening of the railway line from Vienne to Trieste. The new traffic route became a new orientation guidance for vedutisti, since that period the so-called railway veduta series present us settlements and places that nobody had paid any interest in until then (Zidani most).
In second part of the 19th century, veduta painting became less significant due to photography, and gradually started to fade away.
The oldest veduta is a lavated sketch ink is by Leopold Wiser presenting Dessenlbrunner’s “imperial royal privileged” cloth mill in Selo near Ljubljana (today Selo mansion in Moste). Among authors of other vedutas feature F. Runk, J. Fischbach, V. Dorfmeister, J. Hyrtl, J. Wagner and F.X. Sandmann.

“LANGUAGE IN DISTRESS” -
ON THE 70th ANNIVERSARY OF NIKO GRAFENAUER

Niko Grafenauer (1940), poet, essayist and translator, gave Slovenian poetry a strong poetical impetus in the 60th of the 20th century. His confessional character extends from soft sentimentality to painful bitterness, while always present intellect shows him the world that is “cruel like unambiguous consciousness”. His prominent collections of poems are »Stiska jezika«“(Language in distress), “Štukature« (Stucco),”Palimpesti« (Palimpsests), Dihindih. His poetry books for young adults as “Skrivnosti« (Secrets), “Pedenjped”, Majhnica in Stara Ljubljana“(Old Ljubljana), are also noticeable.
