Legal Deposit

Introduction

One of the most important tasks of the National and University Library is the conservation and preservation of the Slovenian written cultural heritage.

Benefits of Legal Deposit

Legal Deposit ensures that works published in Slovenia are kept for the use of present and future generations, and provides for research into all aspects of Slovenian life and culture.
Publications are also listed in the Slovenian National Bibliography

Legislation

Legal Deposit was introduced into the Slovenian territory as early as 1807. Over two centuries, it has undergone a number of revisions.
Since the independence of Slovenia, several efforts have been made to revise the law of 1972. In 2006, a new law on legal deposit was passed by the Slovenian parliament.

Changes to Legal Deposit

  1. As of October 19, 2006, the National and University Library requires only four copies of printed published works to fulfil Legal Deposit requirements. Previously, sixteen copies were required.
    However,

  • if a publication is financed or co-financed by public funds (EU, state or local resources), then sixteen copies need to be deposited;
  • if a publication is a doctoral thesis, or if the price of one copy exceeds EUR 1000, only two copies need to be supplied;
  • in the case of electronic publications, only one copy needs to be supplied.
  1. Legal Deposit has been extended to include electronic publications.
  2. Publishers have a legal obligation to send legal deposit copies, without charge, of each of their publications within fifteen days of publication. Previously, printers had to send the legal deposit copies.
  3. All publications received through legal deposit are acknowledged with a written receipt.
  4. Colophon is mandatory in all publications, except ephemera.
  5. Instead of eleven deposit libraries there are thirteen deposit libraries. Only the deposit copies received in sixteen copies will be distributed to all deposit libraries by the National and University Library.
