Short description of the field of work of the institution

• collect, process, store, preserve and protect the national imprint, i.e. »slovenica« (works written in the Slovenian language, by Slovenian authors, referring to Slovenia or Slovenians, or published by Slovenian publishers), and provide access for national and international users;
• conduct and implement the program of protection and restoration of the written Slovenian cultural heritage, and organise and carry out protection and restoration of library material;
• provide users at home and abroad access to information on library material by producing and publishing current and retrospective Slovenian national bibliography and other databases;
• provide bibliographic control of printed and electronic publications included in »slovenica«;
• provide users access and use of library collection and other information sources;
• participate actively in the development of the Slovenian library system and librarianship;
• develop the Slovenian citizens‛ information literacy skills by providing training and organising different courses for library users.

In the function of the Slovenian parent library, NUK strives to:

• provide the operation and fulfil the objectives of the Library System Development Centre;
• collect, process and mediate statistical data on the operation of libraries, and keep the record of libraries;
• produce background documents for the adoption of general regulations and professional recommendations in the area of librarianship;
• organise and implement continuing education and professional further training of library staff;
• carry out research activities in the area of librarianship;
• develop a special collection of library science material and provide an information centre in the field of librarianship;
• grant professional titles in the area of librarianship.

As a university library NUK strives to:

• develop a comprehensive collection of national and international scholarly and scientific publications in order to support the educational and research activities of the students, faculties and staff of the University of Ljubljana;
• develop and manage the collection of higher education works which have been published at the University of Ljubljana or their authors are employees of this university;
• co-ordinate the Ljubljana University Library System operation;
• develop the information literacy skills of the students and staff at the University of Ljubljana by providing training on evaluation, selection, retrieval and use of different types and formats of information sources.
